ADULTS: “YOU TOO NEED TO BE HEARD.”

Abril 15, 2020 by Natacha Latouf

I know you have probably been bombarded with information on how to “survive” this lockdown and possibly getting frustrated and irritated with information overload on COVID-19 and what to do or not to do to keep you safe, or you possibly getting tired of reading the same kind of information over and over again, and get quite bored or flustered with- “How to survive lockdown”.

I hear you!

I recently sent a PDF of a workbook for adults (Conscious Coping in the time of COVID-19 created by Kerry Acheson- Counselling Psychologist, Life Coach and Therapeutic Play Practitioner and Karen Anne Hope Andrews- Clinical Psychologist)  to work on or to use as a diary to jot down how you (adults) are feeling and how you are managing through this lockdown.

I would like you to be aware that as valuable as this workbook is, you still need to open it and use it and as effective as that will be, there still is a need for us adults to be heard and to have a sounding board to bounce off ‘how we feel’, or how we are struggling through this situation.

Just a listening ear. A place to vent!

When it started, we transformed into survival mode and made sure we had all the information needed to keep afloat. Now we are just bobbing up and down in the water, waiting for this storm to be over. Our lifeboat is full of information, but we’re running low on fuel to keep the motor going.

We may be feeling frustrated, exhausted, bored, unmotivated, angry, scared and depressed.

I want you to be aware that the online service I provide is not only for children but for yourselves (adults) who may be struggling with day-to-day functioning as well:

  • Maybe losing your cool or patience, with your partner, children and any other family member staying in lockdown with you, since they are in your space and you can’t think, or work, or just be alone and breath.
  • Maybe you get frustrated and irritated with yourself for being unable to attain anything and feeling unmotivated to do any chores or reach any goals.
  •  Maybe you feel lonely or “separated” or losing touch with the outside world and the people you have always visited or been visited by, and you just feel a sense of drifting off, lonely, sad and depressed.
  •  Maybe you feel stressed and anxious and worried about how you are going to survive financially through this or whether your kids are going to be able to qualify for anything in the future.
  • Maybe you are in a battle with your teen or young children while trying to help them with their school work, or maybe it is that you don’t understand what it is that they have to do or how to do it. At the same time, you have your own agendas for the day and stressing about completing your own workload.
  • Maybe you are a divorced parent who is missing your children or if having the opportunity to see your children, you are getting upset because the children are not being co-operative on their return to you, or you possibly getting flack from the ex.

Adults, you also need to look after yourselves! You too, need to be heard!
